Many procedures can be performed on-site in our consulting or treatment room. Day surgery procedures are performed at the Mackay Specialist Day Hospital, conveniently located next door.
Our clinic diagnoses and treats all eye conditions – some common services are described below. In addition to the below services, we offer treatment for involuntary muscle spasm around the eye (e.g. hemifacial spasm and benign essential blepharospasm) with injections of neuromuscular blockers.
We strive for timely service in order to keep waiting times to a minimum and endeavour to accommodate emergency cases, whenever possible. That said, patients do not feel rushed and we are always happy to answer any questions you may have about your condition or treatment plan.
Patients can also access our clinic services in Proserpine and Bowen, with Dr Ed Boets consulting in these towns on a monthly basis.
Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures in the world. It is performed off-site at the Mackay Specialist Day Hospital as a day surgery procedure. During surgery, the cloudy lens of the eye is replaced with an artificial lens (known as an intraocular lens or IOL). Our doctors have significant experience using the latest lens technology and offer a range of lens options so you can select one that best suits your vision and lifestyle needs.
Our clinic is one of the few places in the region where patients can access specialist care for the full range of retinal conditions. Highly experienced retinal surgeon, Dr Andre Horak, uses the latest technology to perform complex procedures such as retinal detachment surgeries. He also provides treatment for medical retinal conditions, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy.
In order to be able to assess the retina at the back of the eye, your ophthalmologist will administer pupil-dilating eye drops. Please note that these cause blurred vision for about 4–6 hours, so you may not be able to drive home from your appointment. In some cases, treatment may be initiated on the same day. Eye (intravitreal) injections and laser therapy (which is different to laser eye surgery) are performed in the consultation or treatment rooms. Patients requiring retinal surgery will have their procedure at a day surgery.
Patients with glaucoma require ongoing care from an ophthalmologist. Treatment aims to stop or slow the condition from worsening to prevent sight loss. For the majority of patients, regular use of medicated eye drops is sufficient to manage the condition.
Patients who require additional treatments such as laser therapy or surgery can access these at our clinic. Laser procedures for glaucoma (e.g. selective laser trabeculoplasty and laser peripheral iridotomy) are painless and quick and are performed in our treatment rooms. Surgical procedures (e.g. filtration surgery) are performed under local anaesthetic at the Mackay Specialist Day Hospital.
Children can receive eye care at our clinic. This includes treatment for general eye conditions as well as specialist care for conditions such as strabismus (crossed eyes). We are always happy to review any eye issues picked up in routine health checks with your optometrist, GP or maternal and child health nurse.

Our clinic is situated in Mackay’s medical precinct, opposite the Mackay Mater Hospital, a 5-minute drive from both Caneland Central and Mount Pleasant Shopping Centre. Northpoint Retail Centre is also close by. Free on-site parking is available at the front, side and back of our premises.
DO NOT DRIVE YOURSELF TO YOUR APPOINTMENT if you are a retinal patient. Please arrange for someone to accompany you home after your appointment as you may not be able to drive yourself. We also recommend you bring sunglasses as you may be sensitive to glare.
Our clinic is easy to reach by public transport. Bus route 306 stops directly opposite our clinic (Mater Hospital stop).
There are disabled parking spaces available at the front and side of the clinic. We can also provide a wheelchair for use during your appointment if required.
